Ergonomics & Human Factors For Railways

While David Hitchcock Limited operates as a general practice of ergonomics, since initially working on behalf of British Rail to provide their mandatory training in health and safety management, over the years we have built up considerable expertise in providing consultancy and training services for small and large UK and international rail projects, along with research for government departments.

In addition, on behalf of the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education David also lectures and examines on postgraduate railway programmes and publishes regularly in many journals and books.

We are able to bring our general practice experience to a broad range of rail applications.  Recent projects have included.

  • Application and implementation of the RSSB Musculoskeletal Assessment Tool for Train Drivers (MAT).
  • Application of ergonomics and human factors standards to achieve concept design compliance.
  • Assessment of a new rail grinder design.
  • Cab ergonomics improvement programme.
  • Control room and equipment design evaluation.
  • Driver and Driver Manager briefing and training programmes in the control of posture and movement risks.
  • Ergonomics aspects of Driver Advisory Systems.
  • Evaluation of alternative cab seats.
  • Postural risk reviews of different railway staff.
  • Research into the usability and acceptability of the Driver’s Safety Device (DSD).
  • Using fitting trials to determine acceptable cab layouts.
